Over the years, the percolator has probably been the single most-used method for making coffee in USA homes, because percolator is a long lasting inexpensive device.
This is not the best way to brew coffee, because water is repeatedly run over the same coffee, over extraction occurs, diminishing the freshness and flavor producing a bitter brew.
Many people still enjoy this old favorite, and with careful timing you can get a wonderful cup.

1.    Fill urn with water for the number of cups of coffee you want.
2.    Place a fairly coarse-ground coffee ground in the top chamber. 1 tabs per cup of water.
3.    Fit basket into the urn and place on stovetop. It is important that the water level be below the bottom of the coffee chamber.
4.    Heat the water to boiling.
5.    The hot water is distributed at the top over the perforated lid of the coffee chamber.
This water then seeps through the coffee grounds and leaves the coffee chamber through the bottom, dropping back into the lower half of the pot.
6.    Watch the coffee bubble up through the glass dome to measure how dark (strong) it's getting. (Brewing should take about 5 minutes.)
7.    Remove the filter basket with the used grounds and throw out used coffee in the basket before pouring the mixture to cups.
8. Serve coffee and enjoy!

In a percolator it is difficult to regulate the brew strength. You can start measuring time of percolating from when water first appears to bubble in the glass dome on the lid. Of course, brew time is relative to amount of coffee, the grind, and the temperature as well. Experiment a little until you are satisfied with taste of your coffee.
