Steam espresso machines are the most common machines found in homes. They are small enough to fit in home kitchens and you don't have to be atomic physician to use them. And they are quick. Steam espresso machines use steam pressure to force water through ground. Sometimes this pressure is simply not high enough to produce great espresso.

If you make only milk-based drinks this can be good for you. But if you are real espresso freak this type of espresso machine will not satisfy your needs.

A manual piston-driven espresso machines are authentic and oldest, most primitive espresso machines designed in Italy in the middle of 20th century.
This design requires strong arms to make the espresso because barista uses a lever to force pressure onto hot water, driving it through the coffee grinds. Your arm will need to provide consistent pressure of around 9 atmospheres.
The amount of time to extract a shot is crucial; it is not easy to make a perfect espresso from the beginning. You must practice and learn this skill until you became a master. So, this kind of espresso machines is not for the average user.
These machines are very quiet with few parts and low maintenance. And they really look beautiful. So if you are serious about your espresso and goes to the gym often, these espresso machines are perfect for you.

Semi automatics are very common home espresso machines. As they are cheap and give you a level of control they are ideal for the coffee enthusiast who wants to create great espresso with not too much skill.
They work just like automatic espresso machines – hot water is delivered using a pump system. But in a semi-automatic machine you have to prepare and place the coffee ground in the machine by yourself. Push on start button and the machine will do its job. Once the espresso machine is done, switch it off manually.
Cleaning the port filter after each brewing is necessary.
But one thing is for shure: these espresso machines provide a great espresso.

Automatic Espresso Machines

Fully automatic espresso machines operate on one-touch systems. The pressure that is needed for brewing espresso is delivered by a pump, which you start by pressing a button. The pump turns itself off automatically once a preset amount of espresso is made. They have the same components as a semi automatic except they have electronic controls to start and stop the brew cycle at preset levels.
If you are not really interested in practicing (like you need in manual and semi-automatic machines) an automatic will produce the superior espresso for you. But you still have to learn some skills to get the best espresso: right course of grind, how to measure the right amount of the grounds, how to press grounds correctly into the filter basket, etc.
The entire process of espresso-making takes minimal time, and the machines are already preset to do its job with just one touch of a button. But of course, the price of these machines is higher then for manual and semi-automatic espresso makers.
